Checklists

Setting Up Utilities When You Move to Austin: Electric, Water, Trash and Internet

Here's the checklist we give customers so the lights are on when the truck arrives.

Electricity: it depends on your address

  • City of Austin: Austin Energy is city-owned, so you don't pick a retail provider inside its service area.
  • Suburbs: many are served by electric co-ops or other utilities. Check your address before you assume.

Water and wastewater

In the city, water is Austin Water, usually on the same City of Austin Utilities bill. Suburbs use city utilities or MUDs (municipal utility districts).

Trash and recycling

Inside the city, Austin Resource Recovery provides trash and recycling. In HOA and suburban areas, it may be the city or a contracted hauler.

Internet

Book your install at least 1–2 weeks out, because new-build neighborhoods sometimes have limited options.

Timeline

  • 2 weeks out: start electric and water service, and schedule internet.
  • Move day: take meter photos at both homes.
  • First week: update your driver's license.
